Although it is rare, a person can take in an excess of water that will result in a condition known as hyponatremia. This is when the blood becomes over-diluted to the point where it impairs cell function. However, dehydration is far more common.

Dehydration is a condition that can occur when the body loses water faster than it can replace it. When a person reaches dehydration, it can be dangerous so it is important to recognize the signs so you can take action as soon as possible.
The first sign of dehydration that is going to appear is a dry mouth, or thirst. In addition to that, a person that is in the process of dehydrating will experience symptoms like tiredness, a lack of urination or urine that is exceptionally dark, cramps, headache, dizziness and in the extreme, confusion and disorientation.

Tips for Staying Hydrated

The best advice regarding dehydration is for people to take steps to avoid it in the first place. This may be more difficult under certain circumstances, but there are actions that you can take to ensure that you are properly hydrated.
To start with, try to always keep a supply of drinking water handy. Make sure to take a bottle of water with you when you go out and drink it regularly throughout the day. If you are going to engage in any serious physical activity, make sure to drink before, during and after the activity. Using sports drinks can also be good for replacing fluid and electrolytes in the body.
Managing the amount of water in the body is so important and many people do not even realize when they are not getting enough water. The general rule is for a person is to drink about 64-ounces of water per day, but this can vary depending on the individual and their lifestyle. So get out, have fun and stay hydrated!
